Is it a trend or a bad rumor; the end of the library?
We have heard it all; the end of books as we know them. Small independent book stores are closing. Large chain book stores are closing. Library branches are closing. It is because the new generation is reading on electronic devices and people no longer buy books. I know that some of this is true, but in the design business, I have repeated requests for home libraries. They may be entire rooms, but they are also bookcase units, built out walls to hold book collections and comfy little reading nooks.
There is nothing like curling up and turning the pages of a good book. Books appeal to the senses in a way electronics cannot. Book collections are personal and often very unique. You can learn so much about a person’s true self by looking at their book collection. Books make a house, home.
Decorating with books can be interesting and fun. If you are moving to a new location and don’t know what to do with your books, here are a few ideas..
Try an armoire, open cabinet or designated shelving in the kitchen to hold the cookbooks combined with interesting pottery.
If you love gardening and horticulture, find a spot near your favorite plants. Perhaps a wicker etagere on a sun porch will work.
Are you a fashionista? Keep those books on display in the bedroom, dressing room, or walk in closet for those times you need inspiration. Integrate those books with objects in the same theme. It will make you smile.
Just as children’s books are in the nursery for nap time reading, if you entertain house guests, leave a few books in the guest room, particularly in topics you know would appeal to them. It is a nice personal touch.
