We at J. Namnoun’s are proud to be the largest Hand Washing and Restoration facility in the state of Connecticut. Despite our size, we treat every rug with care. We wash all types of rugs, machine-made or hand-made. Important factors to attend to while cleaning a rug include bleeding, damage and any other relevant issues. Below is a step by step diagram of what we do with your carpets throughout the cleaning process.

STEP 1 - Dusting

In order to properly clean a carpet, we must first make sure all dirt, grime and any other filth is extracted. A vacuum at home can only pick up the dirt on top of the carpet. Our process of beating the rugs upside down knocks the dirt out of the foundation of the rug (as seen in the picture below). Dusting can take from an hour to 2 days or more depending on how long ago your rug was last washed.

STEP 2 ­ Wash

After the dusting process is completed, we then check whether or not it has a bleeding issue, stains of any kind, or possible tears. There are two methods to washing. For more delicate rugs, we utilize a dry cleaning process called “foam washing”. This involves applying a lanolin based shampoo without wetting the carpet. A rug is placed into this category if it has a bleeding issue, if it is very old, or is in a fragile state. For more sturdy rugs that can handle the beating, we hand wash them with a mechanical brush to control the amount of washing necessary. Hand washing is crucial because a washing machine might tear, bleed, or completely ruin a carpet.

STEP 3 - Extracting

Once the shampooing of the carpet is complete, we then must extract the dirty shampoo from the rug. For the foam washed carpets, we use an air extraction. For the rest of the rugs, we purge about 700lbs of water pressure into the rug at the same time extracting both the dirt shampoo and water.

STEP 4 - Deodorize

This quick and easy step involves applying deodorizer into the carpet to neutralize any odors that may have come from pets, mildew, or other odor causes.

STEP 5 ­ Carding

After the deodorizer is settled into the rug, we then card the pile. Carding is another word for combing (like ones hair). Most carpets new and old have a directional knap making one side of the rug to appear light and the other side dark. Sometimes the directional knap is rather drastic, causing the rug to look discolored. To correct this, we groom the wool pile in one direction.

STEP 6 ­ Drying

Drying is a crucial step in the cleaning process. If a rug is kept wet for a long period of time, the rug will grow mildew or eventually dryrot (when the cotton foundation of the carpet rots and becomes brittle). Our drying camber dries any carpet in less than 24 hours.

STEP 7 ­ Detailing Fringes

This last service really completes the cleaning. The typically cotton fringes tend to get just as or even more dirty than the rug itself. To clean the fringes, we use a bleach and water mixture and carefully bleach the fringes without touching the carpet. When complete, we extract the fringes so the bleach is completely rinsed. Afterwards, we put the carpet back into the drying camber and let it dry once more.

STEP 8 ­ Pick-up or Delivery

Once the carpets are cleaned, we call the client and inform them that the pieces are done and ready for pick-up. We deliver and install the carpets if they are 8’x10’ or larger. For more information on pick-up and delivery, please call us at 860-522-6368.
